‘Stockport Death’ Pushes Beyond Conventional Composition

Stockport Death is set to release on Jan. 16.

Stockport Death is a deeply intimate personal reflection that defies established traditions of musical expression.

The project moves beyond the conventions of composition, presenting a collection of atypical sounds and samples that offer an unpaved mode of artistic expression and introspection.

From a wailing organ to electronic shrieks and whimpers, Stockport Death carries an emotional weight that shimmers beneath its unconventional surface.

Despite its odd instrumentation and the absence of time signatures or discernible keys, the project conveys the joy, pain and frustration of its creator.

The nearly hourlong recording is a sonic journey, guiding the listener through vast halls of organ music, claustrophobic corridors of white noise and peaceful porches draped in the sound of wind chimes.

The album is by the New Jersey artist Anne Lewandowski, who performs under the name Rainbib. The project, set for release Jan. 16, is available on Bandcamp.

It joins an extensive body of work from an artist who has been releasing music as Rainbib since early 2024.

Stockport Death is my most crucial work to date, as well as my most sentimental,” Lewandowski said. “I drew most of my inspiration for this album from personal events rather than aesthetics or a particular sound.”

The album consists of compositions created by the artist in recent months.

“With this release, I took my favorite elements from previous work and utilized them in a more restrained way, both conceptually and sonically,” Lewandowski said. “I think of this album as my current magnum opus, as well as the beginning of a new era.”

Through walls of static, crackling signals and synthesized soundscapes, Lewandowski appears to be charting a new path forward — one that directly confronts fear, loss, and grief while also reflecting moments of joy and serenity.
