Mintzzy is an assemblage of musical ideas presented through the eyes of a youthful creator. The project, from a mysterious Austin, Texas-based musician, is a young adult’s scrapbook: a memory here, a reference there and a deep confession that seems intended only for the author in the midst of reflection.

Entirely rejecting the shared conventions of composition, the project offers its low-fidelity music as a stream of consciousness. Throughout the recording, rarely does a passage or musical idea repeat, challenging the infrastructure of traditional songwriting.

Presented as an unorganized and unrefined extended play, the recording takes on an additional layer of meaning, serving as a musical representation of the literary tradition — a young Kerouac, Faulkner or perhaps most appropriately Woolf.

In doing so, it establishes a sense of unfiltered access into the mind of its creator.

The self-titled project’s opening song “Castle music/you’ll make it back to the ocean” serves as its overture. A pop-centered beachside beat, complete with sounds from the shoreline and distant seagulls. A uniquely unpredictable work set within the timbre of an electronic pop song, the piece establishes the artist’s scrapbook-like writing style and aesthetic, leaving the listener poised for the bars ahead and waiting to hear what the next whisper holds.

The song offers a sense of dreamy calm and the lightheartedness of youth, when moments are filled with infinite possibility and the body’s senses are ready to be activated by their surroundings.

These images of a carefree summer day quickly depart as “lal” begins, and the artist, a young voice, begins to share a deep disdain for someone in a confessional whisper. Still presented with a dance-forward beat, the song highlights the creator’s nontraditional approach to songwriting, with no definite verse or chorus and only introducing a barely intelligible vocal line in the final third of the composition.

A uniquely unpredictable work set within the timbre of an electronic pop song, the piece establishes the artist’s scrapbook-like writing style and aesthetic, leaving the listener poised for the bars ahead and waiting to hear what the next whisper holds.

“Rabbit Hops” is a memory of a deeply uncomfortable and painful relationship, told in fragments between shots from a drum machine’s hi-hat. Briefly, the piece exists as if it is a note to the artist themselves or perhaps to the person who hurt them.

The recording continues with “used2Hyde,” a mellow blend of beats and melody from a harmonica, while another observation is shared by the artist within the nontraditional structure of the composition.

The work comes to an end with “green eye girlll.” Filled with challenging images of youth, identity and pain, the piece is an interesting blend of raw acoustic guitar, voice and glitch art.

Two overlapping compositions merge and detach from one another, as if the music were words written in a diary and its wet ink blending into other pages of the book, melding with other portions of the handwritten text.

It is clear Mintzzy offers more than just a collection of songs. It is a deeply successful execution of the creative process. It makes clear music and sound production’s ability to reflect more than just the feelings tied to a composition’s subject matter, but rather to establish an entire aesthetic that reflects the creator’s vision.

This musical undertaking underscores the deep intimacy and vulnerability that exist when we just sit and listen.
